I wouldn't call it a love-fest there Counts. Me and Chris haven't always seen eye to eye 100% of the time (but then again who does?),and perhaps I have been a bit rough on him,but at the end of the day that's what you sign up for when you coach (no different than an inmate cursing me in my profession). How many times have folks questioned B.I. for some of the zany stuff he has called? He's man enough to handle that, and so is Crabtree. I do however respect him as a person, and can respect that he at least tried at Pound. It's easy for folks to slam the man,but take the head job over there Counts, and see how long it takes you to have your first of many "Oh crap!" moments.

LOL I am not saying I could do any better and as far as the BI thing goes there is a differance in questioning his 4th down attemps and Pounds inabality to accout for a back in the flats all season.

Like I said I am not saying he is not a nice guy but you are going to have a tough time convinceing me he is anything other than a below avg coach

    Not all but enough LOL

Saw some of the same goofs in the preseason scrimages with Haysi as I did in week 10 vs Clintwood

There were 6 different starters on defense against Clintwood than started against Haysi because of injuries and quitters. And the cornerback, a senior, knew better against Haysi.

That's just the thing Counts, you can preach to your players til you are blue in the face what their responsibilities are (especially in pass coverage) but you can't go out there and do their job for them. That's where lack of talent and football knowledge shows up on the field. That just goes back to lack of fundamentals from P-nut to JV being taught. When you have players with little to no football savy, they tend to bail out on pass plays because that's what they teach 'em in P-nut. Coaching is teaching, and some kids just don't get it. You would be surprised at how many teams in this area don't have the LBs to effectively run a 4-4 defense in this area..but it's prolly the most common defense in this region. The reason is because OLB is the hardest position to fill with limited numbers on a team..cuz in order to have 4 good LBs, that means you have 4 athletes on your team with great football instincts..and that's after you have filled your CB slots. News flash.. The most susceptible area vs. A small team is the pass in the flat for this very reason..it goes back to the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os. And before you say "if one player couldn't do it, I'd find someone who could", consider this: If you have your best 11 on the field and 4 of em shouldn't be on the field to begin with, but it's the best you have, what do you do? I can empathize with that situation cuz I've been in it before. I've seen it in most every CD team as well. Fact is most of the smaller teams are lucky to be able to put 2 good CBs, 2 good or adequate LBs and a decent D-line on the field..even on the varsity level. They always have some players on the field they are trying to "hide"..and they're only out there cuz that's the best they have to put out there. That has nothing to do with the coach. He could load up and blitz like hell and give up big play after big play, or he could put 4 LBs and 4 DBs out there and die slowly.. either way a team with superior numbers of athletes will beat you 9 out of 10 times. That's what makes Tom Turner the greatest coach in SWVA history. He could overcome those odds. But partially the reason he was able to was because Appy had coaches in their P-nut and JV programs that taught fundamentals so well that the players were, for the most part, ready and capable to think and play on a varsity level the minute they left JV. A feeder system like that is the exception and not the rule tho. Its hard for a person from a football rich town and school to comprehend a situation like that..but that's how it is.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

Yep. That was the most talent that had been their since John Gaby and Aubrey Herndon played there. He had 2 rb's that could have started for most of the teams in the LPD. I think he's not a good coach, at least not a good head coach. I also think that he went into a no win situation by going to Pound. It's a shame but a fact, if you want to be a head coach in SWVA, Pound is the worst possible place to try to apply that trade.

True that...I honestly think he's a capable coach, and would've been ok if he had been in a better situation. It's really hard to judge a coach based on the situation in Pound cuz I thought Mullins was decent too... But you can't turn a program around in 2 years that's in the same situation as Pound is..hell it takes that long to implement your scheme and build players conditioned to have the discipline to execute it. Problem is the folks up there seem to think you say magic words and, poof, it's done. It don't work that way.

    Re: pound coach resigned

The average fan looks at a game and says team A should beat team B because team C beat team B and team A beat team C. That don't work always.

You are dealing with teenagers, and they are not very dependable at times. In pound, your dealing with teenagers with grand notions poured into their heads about "the p-nut superbowl" and "we won 58 straight p-nut games". Not only that, their parents constantly bewale, deride, rail, whatever you want to say, to bad-mouth the coaches in front of the kids. Then that kid is gonna run through brick wall for the coach that their parent has railed on all week? No.

As far as Ervinton goes, there was definitely "some" talent. But to grow a roster from 14 the first year to 34 the last year takes work. And the Honaker kid wasn't even gonna play football. He was gonna quit school and work with his dad. Alot of Coaching is not just putting talent out there and saying "OK we will win because we have talent", but FINDING that talent and saying "what can I do to get this kid to play" and if he does play, "where can I put him to be most successful".

In 2006, that Ervinton team had 34 on the roster. There were 55 boys eligible to play in the entire school.

Also, in 2004, there were zero boys lifting weights. By 2006, mandatory weight lifting saw at least 20 lifting by the start of the summer, and then more throughout the summer. Most kids who started lifting in 2004 couldn't even bench 100 lbs. Most were well over 200 by 2006.

And the boys coming up and playing hadn't played any youth. There had been NO youth program up there in 5 years, and spots of JV.

Is that X's and O's? No. Is that hard work? Yes. Is that dedication? Yes. Does that amount to good coaching? I don't know.
